The Snapshots in Time Collection
Interior View of Squadron Officers' Club Lounge Tent, CBI Theater, World War II
This photograph captures the interior of a squadron officers' club or recreation tent somewhere in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. Built beneath a large canvas tent roof supported by a central pole, the lounge was furnished with locally made wicker and rattan chairs and tables, softened by patterned curtains and pin-up style wall art -- small comforts American airmen created for themselves at remote forward airbases. Such improvised clubs offered a place to relax, socialize, and momentarily escape the pressures of combat operations over the Himalayan 'Hump' and the CBI's dense jungle terrain. Though no aircraft or personnel appear in this frame, the image documents the everyday off-duty life that sustained morale within a labeled squadron's collection of wartime photographs.
