Hill-Tribe Woman with Traditional Dao Knife, India-Burma Frontier Region
This portrait shows a young woman from a hill-tribe community along the India-Burma frontier, dressed in traditional attire and carrying a dao, a long knife common among Naga and related Northeast Indian hill peoples. Though catalogued within this collection's 'Kashmir' folder, her dress and equipment are more consistent with the Naga Hills region, reflecting the wide-ranging ethnographic photography Allied personnel captured while stationed in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II.
