Portrait of Local Laborer, Burma, China-Burma-India Theater, World War II
This low-angle portrait, from a negative labeled 'Burma Duty,' depicts a local laborer photographed by an American serviceman serving in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II. Thousands of Chinese and Burmese civilians worked alongside Allied forces building and maintaining the roads, airfields, and supply lines that sustained the CBI campaign. Personal photographs like this one, taken by servicemen documenting daily life around them, preserve a human record of the local communities whose labor was essential to the Allied war effort in Asia.
