Karen Women and Children at Church Service, Burma, WWII CBI Theater
Karen women and children gather inside a bamboo church building in Burma in this photograph from the KOTEC China-Burma WWII collection. The Karen, a predominantly Christian ethnic minority, were among the Allies' most steadfast supporters during the China-Burma-India Theater, providing guides, intelligence, and guerrilla fighters against Japanese occupation. Images like this captured the daily and spiritual life of communities whose alliance proved vital to Allied operations in Burma. Project: 218032
