This air-to-air photograph, preserved as a color negative, captures a U.S. Navy jet in flight during a Vietnam War-era deployment of Fighter Squadron VF-162 aboard USS Ticonderoga. VF-162 flew the F-8 Crusader in combat over Southeast Asia during the 1960s, and images like this one document the routine formation flying that made up much of a carrier pilot's daily service.
