The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger was an American interceptor aircraft designed as part of the U.S. Air Force’s attempt to create a supersonic all-weather interceptor to counter Soviet bomber threats. Characterized by its delta wing and area-ruled fuselage (the “Coke bottle” shape), it was the first operational U.S. fighter designed with area ruling to reduce transonic drag. The F-102 was armed primarily with air-to-air missiles carried internally and, despite some performance limitations, served as a crucial part of the United States’ air defense during the Cold War, with some seeing combat in the Vietnam War.
